Admission Policy

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Candidates must possess one of the following qualifications to apply for IIMT’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme in Management.

  • Master’s Degree in any discipline securing at least 60 percent marks (or equivalent) or a two-year post-graduate diploma securing at least 60 percent marks (or equivalent), in addition to a Bachelor’s degree/equivalent with at least 60 percent (or equivalent) marks obtained after a minimum of three years of education.
  • Five-year / four-year Integrated Master’s Degree Programme in any discipline, with at least 60 percent marks (or equivalent).
  • A professional qualification like CA / ICWA / CS (with at least 50 percent aggregate marks) along with a Bachelor’s degree (with at least 60 percent marks)
  • A 4-year / 8-semester Bachelor’s degree with at least 60 percent marks (or equivalent)

Note:

  1. Five percent Marks relaxation is given to SC, ST and PwD candidates
  2. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate would be calculated based on the practice followed by the respective University/Institution. In the case of grades / CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the respective University/ institution. If a University/institution confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result by 100.
  3. The Master's degree or equivalent qualification/Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification should be:
    • (a) from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or
    • (b) recognized by the Ministry of Education, Government of India or (c) possess an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE.

    AND

  4. Have a score of GMAT or GATE * or GRE or UGC-JRF or IIMB as applicable.

•    GMAT and GRE last 5 years (January 2021 to December 2025).
•    GATE last 3 years (2024 to 2026)
•    CAT last 1 year (CAT exam conducted in 2025).
•    IIMB Test to be conducted on October 12, 2025, and February 01, 2026 (Sunday)
•    UGC JRF last 4 years (2022 to 2025)

How to Register for IIMB Test:

  • Round 1: October 12, 2025(Sunday)

         Registration deadline: October 08, 2025 (5:00 P.M. IST)

  • Round 2: February 01, 2026

         Registration deadline: January 23, 2026 (5 P.M. IST)

HOW TO REGISTER FOR IIMB TEST

  • Please visit the Admissions webpage for instructions on how to register for the IIMB Test. Applying for PGPEM or PhD does not automatically register a candidate for the IIMB Test. Similarly, registering for the IIMB Test does not lead to an automatic submission of the PGPEM or PhD application.
  • Applicants can choose to appear in the IIMB Test either once or twice. If the applicant chooses to take the IIMB Test twice, only the highest score will be considered during admission.
  • If the applicant opts for the first round but is unable to attend the test (for whatever reason), the test fee paid earlier stands forfeited. The applicant can appear for the second round by paying the test fee again.
  • Registration for the IIMB Test will generate a receipt number, which the candidates need to enter into the online application form.
  • IIMB Test score will be used for the internal processing of the application, and no test score card shall be issued to the candidate.

TEST FEE

  • Rs 1,200 for each round. The test fee is non-refundable.

Note

The IIMB Test will be conducted and proctored online by IIMB. The candidates can take the test from their own locations / home. The conditions / requirements to be followed by the candidates will be shared ahead of the test.

* Note: Candidates appearing for GATE 2026 can also apply. If the Ph.D. admission interviews are held before the GATE results are declared, candidates should bring a copy of their admit card to the interview and the admission offer will be finalized only after receiving the GATE score from the candidate within the stipulated time. If GATE results are declared before the interviews, candidates should email a copy of their scorecard to dpadmissions@iimtrichy.ac.in and bring a copy of their scorecard to the interview. In the online admission form, such candidates can enter 'NA' in the 'Score' column of Section 4.

DEGREE QUALIFICATIONS

The Master's degree or equivalent qualification/Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification should be:

  • (a) from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or
  • (b) recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
    Candidates who are in the final year of their qualifying degree programme that would make them eligible can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2026, from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar or Director of the university/institute (issued on or before June 15, 2026) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical examinations) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Master's/Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the Master's / Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification referred to n the certificate issued by the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute. The deadline for submission of the mark sheet and the certificate is September 30, 2025. Non-fulfilment of these conditions will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.          

RESERVATION

IIM Tiruchirappalli will follow the Government of India reservation policy for admission to Central Educational Institutions (CEIs).

RELAXATION

Candidates with a PGDM (full-time 2-year MBA program) from any of the IIMs or a PGPBM from IIM Tiruchirappalli will be exempted from having to take the eligibility tests (CAT / GRE / GMAT/ GATE/ UGC -JRF) provided the student has a CGPA greater than 2.6/4.33 or equivalent and has obtained the diploma within five years from the year of admission to the Ph.D program. The candidate will need to record the CGPA obtained in their coursework in the 'Score' column of section 4 of the online form to place their candidature. After submission of the application, the selection process for such a candidate will be identical to that being followed for other candidates.

No application fee is applicable in the case of SC/ST/PwD candidates. Scanned copies of all academic mark sheets, certificates, qualifying examination scorecards, category certificates and research proposals are to be uploaded along with the online application form.

  • The Last date for submission of the Online Application is – January 31, 2026 (23:59 Hours).

Application and Selection Process

  • Candidates are required to fill up the application form available online.
  • Each area evaluates its candidate and makes available its shortlist for the selection process which is held at the IIMT campus at Tiruchirappalli.
  • Those who clear the area round are then interviewed by the Doctoral Programme Committee for a final decision on their candidature.

The selection process at IIM Tiruchirappalli is multi-staged. All stages of this process are equally important for a potential candidate seeking admission into the program.

Stage 1: Submission of the application form Candidates interested in pursuing the Doctoral Programme in Management at IIM Tiruchirappalli (IIMT) begin their application process by submitting their application form and all associated submissions (academic record documents, certificates, qualifying examination scores, application fees etc.). At this stage, candidates express their interest in pursuing their Ph.D. at IIMT by choosing to apply to one or two areas of interest (Click here). This is the first opportunity of communication that the candidate is provided to help members of the admission committee understand their motivation to pursue research in a particular area and join IIMT. Candidates must ensure that they provide all necessary information requested in the form and provide photocopies of any supporting documents they wish to submit to strengthen their candidature. These application forms and supporting documents will be scrutinized, based on which a shortlist will be released. Candidates who qualify to enter the next stage of the admission process will be intimated accordingly. Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the admission process will require the shortlisted candidates to travel to IIMT. These stages are typically held in the month of March. These stages will be held on two consecutive days. IIM Tiruchirappalli will reimburse travel expenses limited to III AC train fare (with a maximum cap), to shortlisted candidates. The details of travel reimbursement will be shared with the shortlisted candidates.

Stage 2: Research Aptitude Examination and Area Interview This stage of the admission process requires the candidates to participate in one or both of the following processes, as:

  • Research Aptitude Examination: This will be a written examination, that is conducted by some of the areas. This examination is conducted to test the candidate's research aptitude in a particular area of specialization. Thus, the content of the examination is very specific to the area. It may range from an examination of the candidates’ quantitative aptitude to their ability to understand and analyze/ synthesize research papers.
  • Area Interview: All candidates shortlisted in Stage 1, will be required to attend the personal interview with members of/ experts in their chosen area of specialization.

Candidates who clear this stage of the process will be sent an offer of admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Management at IIM Tiruchirappalli.

Financial Support

Students receive generous financial support during the program to help them meet their personal expenses, regular research-related expenses, their requirements for hardware and software to facilitate research work, and expenses related to fieldwork, conferences, and workshops. The details of the same are provided below:

  • A full tuition fee and hostel expenses waiver
  • A monthly stipend of Rs.35,000 till clearing of Comprehensive Qualifying Exams (CQE). After clearing the CQE, the monthly stipend will be revised to Rs.37,000 till the submission of the thesis proposal and post that Rs. 40,000 till the end of their fourth year in the programme. The monthly stipend support can be extended for six months for a maximum of two times after that with the concurrence of the DAC and the DPR Committee. If extended two times, the stipend will be paid till May of the student’s fifth year.
  • Start-up Grant: A start-up grant of Rs.50,000 (for purchasing computer hardware and software) is available when students join the programme.
  • Conference Grant: The institute will support up to Rs.3,00,000/- per student during their stay as full-time students for attending national and international conferences.
  • Contingency Grant: A contingency grant of Rs.30,000/- per year is allowed on a reimbursement basis for purchase of hardware, software, books, databases, data collection expenses, conference expenses and any other items directly related to the programme for a maximum of 4 years.
  • Fieldwork Grant: Students undertaking field research will be eligible for the Field Research Grant up to a maximum limit of Rs.50,000/-.
  • The Housing Rent Allowance (HRA) will be provided at 20% of the stipend to married doctoral students residing outside the campus.

Q1. What is Doctoral Program in Management (DPM)?

Doctoral Program is a full-time PhD Program at IIMT. The Program is committed to train individuals who will excel in their area of research through high quality work, that could potentially lead to publications of international standard. It should not be confused with master level Programs such as MBA.

 

Q2. Can I complete the doctoral course on a part-time basis?

Q3. Who can apply for the program?

Students/professionals who want to pursue a career in advanced research and academics (including teaching) are the ideal candidates for this Program. Q4. What is expected from the Doctoral Program students?

Q7. How long is the PhD program?

Students are expected to complete the programme within 4-5 years. However, the maximum duration by which a student is expected to complete the graduating requirements of the programme is Six years.

Q16. What's the degree/title that I get at the completion of the course?

Students are awarded the degree of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (PhD) in the student's area of specialization.

 

Q17. Do I have the scope to do interdisciplinary research?

Yes, No restrictions on interdisciplinary work.  Idea can be discussed with faculty before execution.  Much of the research work done by our students is interdisciplinary in nature.

 

Q18. Can I opt out of PGDM Courses to be undertaken during the first two years of the doctoral programme?

Yes, in case, you hold a PGDM from any IIM or a PGPBM from IIMT, you will be exempt from the PGPM courses offered in year one, provided the student has a CGPA of 2.55/4.33 or equivalent and has obtained the diploma within 5 years from the year of admission to the DPM program.

 

Q19. Will the GATE 2025 exam hall tickets be accepted?

Yes, the GATE 2025 exam will be conducted in the month of February 2025, hence the GATE 2025 hall tickets will be accepted and the candidate has to submit the scorecard to the institute once the results are published. 

 

Q20. Will the UGC-JRF 2025 exam hall tickets be accepted?

No, the UGC-JRF 2025 exam will be conducted in the month of June 2025, UGC-JRF 2024 scorecard will be accepted.
