Smita holds a doctorate in management from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. She teaches core and elective courses to students in the MBA (Post Graduate Program in Management, Post Graduate Program in Management – Human Resources), executive MBA program and doctoral program in management at IIM Trichy. In her academic career she has taught various courses on Macro Organizational Behaviour, Advanced Organizational Theory, Negotiation Essentials for Managerial Effectiveness, Conflict Management, Learning & Development, Organizational Learning & Knowledge Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, Advanced Human Resource Management and International Business Practices.
Smita has designed management development programs and facilitated sessions for mid and senior level executives of various corporates in India; NLC India Ltd., Chennai Petroleum Corp. Ltd., L&T Ltd., VDart Inc., Indian Oil Corp. Ltd., HPCL, Mannapuram Finance, AP Cooperative Bank, Veritas Finance Pvt. Ltd., Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd., UDS Ltd., Cytiva and HL Mando are few such organizations. She has also facilitated programs for National Skill Development Corporation as well as faculty development programs under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Program (MMTTP).
Her research interests revolve around knowledge management, organizational learning, social capital, organizational design and negotiations. She has published in international peer reviewed journals like Asia Pacific Journal of Management. Her work has been presented in international peer reviewed conferences like the Academy of Management (AOM), the European Group of Organization Studies (EGOS), Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) as well as national peer reviewed conferences like Indian Academy of Management (INDAM), Pan IIM Conference, Strategic Management Forum (SMF) to name a few. She has also been the session chair for various renowned conferences like Indian Academy of Management (INDAM) and Indian Subcontinent Decision Sciences Institute International Conference (ISDSI). She has published cases with Ivey Publications (available at Harvard Business School Publishing) and Case Centre. She has been a reviewer for various national and international peer reviewed journals.
Smita draws her administrative experience from both academic administration as well as from the corporate world. She is currently the Chairperson of the Post Graduate Programme in Management – Human Resources (PGPM-HR), which is a two year full-time residential programme offered by IIM Trichy, where students specialize in Human Resource Management. She has also been the Chairperson of the Doctoral Programme in Management at IIM Trichy. She is/has been the co-programme director for various long duration executive development programmes like Executive General Management Programme and Strategic Human Resource Management for multiple batches. She has organized the Doctoral Consortium at the 11th Indian Subcontinent Decision Sciences Institute International Conference. She has also been a member of several committees at the institute. Prior to joining IIM Trichy, she worked at Infosys Ltd.
