Gopal V. is currently a faculty member in the Finance and Accounting area. He has completed the Fellow Programme in Management with a specialization in Finance and Control and a minor in MIS from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. He is a qualified Cost Accountant as well as a qualified Company Secretary. Although his basic education was in Production Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy, he has diversified into areas such as finance, accounting, strategic management, and corporate laws.
He started his career with Lucas TVS Ltd. as a trainee engineer in the Production Engineering Department. After completing his doctoral programme at IIM Calcutta, he joined XIM Bhubaneswar. At XIMB, he was instrumental in conceptualizing the first Investment Fair as early as 1992. He then moved to the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), where he held positions such as Area Chair, Admissions Chairman, and Part-time Programme Chairperson. Apart from regular academic administrative roles, he served on various committees responsible for formulating rules for admissions, postgraduate programmes, faculty manuals, and the implementation of Pay Commission recommendations. At GIM, he introduced a new elective course, Pricing Strategies, which was the first of its kind in India. He also pioneered the concept of offering separate Working Capital Management courses for finance and non-finance specializations. He was a visiting scholar at UFSIA, Antwerp, Belgium, during his tenure at GIM.
After serving at GIM for 12 years, he moved to the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Nagpur, where he held the position of Dean. In addition to his role as Dean, he also managed the admissions portfolio at IMT Nagpur. Professor Gopal is an expert in the management of new private B-schools and has already been associated with three start-ups. IIM Trichy is the fourth start-up B-school with which he is associated. At IMT Nagpur, he conducted the CAPSTONE simulation game. He has also been a visiting faculty member at Chonnam National University, South Korea, where he taught Mergers and Acquisitions during the Summer 2010 term.
He is an avid public sector enthusiast and was part of the initial team that formulated the policy framework for the Memorandum of Understanding between Central Public Sector Enterprises and the Government of India. This policy led to the formulation of the performance management system for administrative ministries of the Government of India under the RFD policy. He is also a member of the Ad-hoc Task Force constituted to advise the High Power Committee on draft RFDs.
He has participated in several national and international conferences and has published research in both national and international journals. He also conceptualized and conducted the first international conference on the Management of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises at IMT Nagpur.
He has conducted training programmes for various organizations, including Power Grid Corporation, NTPC, Odisha Forest Corporation, and NALCO. He has also been a visiting faculty member at the National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur, and has delivered training programmes across areas such as finance and accounts, cost management, and strategic management.
He has successfully guided three research scholars for their Ph.D. at IIM Trichy and two more at IMT Nagpur. Currently, he is guiding one research scholar for a Ph.D. He has also supervised more than twelve master’s-level projects for the PGPBM programme (MBA-level) conducted at the Chennai campus.
